Rally to Stop the $145 Million Bailout of the Cayuga Power Plant

Nearly six months ago Governor Cuomo made an announcement that our movement worked toward for years–New York State would have a statewide ban on hydrofracking. In that victory Tompkins County and the Finger Lakes played a central role as the grassroots, scientific and legal epicenter of the movement.

But even now, after the Governor has pledged to ban fracking in New York State our work continues. From the Cayuga Power Plant to the Crestwood Storage facility on Seneca Lake, residents of Tompkins County and the Finger Lakes are playing a major role in fighting the massive buildout of fracked gas infrastructure that continues to threaten the future of our communities.

We’ve seen what we can accomplish when we stand together for a better world. Join us on the 27th to call on Governor Cuomo to support our community to take the next step toward a fossil free future — by closing the Cayuga Power Plant, approving transmission line upgrades that will make the grid more energy efficient and pave the way for clean energy development, and providing direct transition assistance to the plant workers and community.

What: fossil free tompkins and Build a Fossil Fuel Free Tompkins County. Why: After the NY Fracking Ban our work continues — it’s time to move beyond fossil fuels and build an economy fueled by clean energy. Our region helped lead the anti-fracking movement in New York. It’s time again for us to work together to create the future we need. Details: Rally with Speakers, Music, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Food, Street Theater with GIANT Puppets and a GIANT inflatable coal plant.
Where: Downtown Ithaca, Dewitt Park (Corner of Cayuga and Buffalo Streets)
