DON’T WORRY, DRIVE ON: Fossil Fuels & Fracking Lies >
With nearly 100K views on YT and Vimeo combined in ten days, our latest short animation has been delivering bite-sized bits of key messaging. We hope you enjoy and can use. A more ‘frack specific’ video is on the way . . . featuring our version of Troy McClue (Simpsons fans?)
Will Natural Gas Fuel America in the 21st Century?
In this groundbreaking report, Post Carbon Institute Fellow and geoscientist David Hughes (formerly of Geological Survey of Canada) shatters the myth that U.S. natural gas can be a “bridge fuel” from high-carbon sources of energy like coal and oil to a renewable energy future and calls into question the prevalent assumption that we have access to over a century of cheap and easy natural gas. The report points out that even if the EIA’s forecast of growth in shale gas production to 45% of U.S. supply by 2035 were to come to fruition, the claims made by industry that natural gas can provide a significant substitute for coal in power generation and oil for transportation in current growth projections are false. The latest projections by the EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook call for shale gas to be 49% of supply by 2035 with net exports of gas via LNG beginning in 2021. The logistical efforts in achieving this in terms of the number of wells, the geology required, and the collateral environmental damage, defy belief, as documented in the report.

Will Natural Gas Fuel America in the 21st Century? was followed by a second report  that extends the work of Cornell on comparing life-cycle GHG emissions of shale gas to coal through the electricity generation process and shows that for a least the first 30-50 years, switching from coal to shale gas make the GHG problem worse.

These reports have been viewed/downloaded over 15,000 times by a global audience of concerned individuals, orgs, researchers, municipalities and others concerned with factual data on natural gas (as opposed to specious claims).

Our next report “Drill, Baby, Drill: Can Unconventional Fuels Usher in a New Era of Energy Abundance?” will will expose fracking lies and propaganda in painstaking detail. Te reports will review unconventional sources of oil and gas from the perspective of current status and future potential. Each source will be analyzed in terms of resource size, historical development to date, flow rates achieved, potential future flow rates, capital-, energy- and resource-inputs required and environmental costs. The results of this analysis will be compared to assumptions in current “demand-based” forecasts of future growth in oil and gas production by organizations such as the EIA and IEA, both in terms of the likelihood they can be achieved and the costs and environmental implications of doing so. In addition, the report will examine the increased economic, health, and environmental costs of unconventional oil and gas production, as well as the impact of investment in unconventional fossil fuels on the transition to renewable energy.

“Drill, Baby, Drill” will be released in October 2012.

Joseph Romm’s new book, “Language Intelligence: Lessons on Persuasion from Jesus, Shakespeare, Lincoln, and Lady Gaga”. It’s okay to chuckle, but Romm is one of the fiercest and most persuasive people on our side. In his book he points out how and why we too often lose ground, despite being armed with unassailable facts. Facts alone will not win the day. Facts plus a solid grasp on the earth-shaping power of rhetoric, well, those can enable a ragtag group of activists to overcome any number of billion-dollar war chests.  Check it out here >>
